DRCC input into review of Relationship & Sexuality Education

The National Council for Curriculum & Assessment (NCCA) were asked by former Minister for Education and Skills, Richard Bruton, TD, to undertake a comprehensive review of Relationship and Sexuality Education (RSE). There are three components; Drawing on Research, Consulting with Key Leaders, and Consulting with Schools to review RSE at both primary and post-primary levels.

In our work in Dublin Rape Crisis Centre, we see the often life-long consequences of the trauma and harm caused by sexual violence of all kinds. We know from our experience that much of this harm is caused by people’s lack of knowledge and capacity to cope with their society. School-based sex education should be viewed as education that has a lifelong impact: providing children and young people with the knowledge, understanding and skills to develop positive attitudes towards sexuality; to take care of their sexual health; and to enhance their interpersonal relationships, now and into the future.
