More Than Monitoring Needed For Sex Offenders List

The Dublin Rape Crisis Centre (DRCC) broadly welcomed the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform (JELR) Mr. Brian Lenihan’s publication of the priorities which the Garda Commissioner must take into account, in preparing his policing plan for 2008.

Ellen O’Malley-Dunlop, Chief Executive, DRCC said “The DRCC welcomes the requirement of Minister Brian Lenihan of the Garda Commissioner to include the monitoring of registered sex offenders and to cooperate with the PSNI and UK police forces in particular in this area. We would urge the Minister to make sure that the sex offenders list is not only monitored, but that there are mechanisms in place for when the people on this list do not adhere to the current requirements. Those monitoring these people must have the power to sanction, otherwise the system will not work.”
